      (1853–90), Dutch painter; full name Vincent Willem Van Gogh. He is best known for his post-impressionist work, influenced by contact with impressionist painting and Japanese woodcuts after he moved to Paris in 1886. His most famous pictures include several studies of sunflowers. Affected with severe depression, he cut off part of his own ear and eventually committed suicide.
