- (1833–64), Confederate military officer; full name James Ewell Brown Stuart. He resigned from the US army in 1861 to join the Confederate army as a brigadier general. Known for his brazen raids and reconnaissance missions during the Civil War, he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Yellow Tavern in Virginia.
