- (1903–41), US baseball player; full name Henry Louis Gehrig; known as the Iron Horse. He played a then-record 2,130 consecutive major league games for the New York Yankees from 1925 to 1939; his stamina earned him his nickname. He died from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often called Lou Gehrig's disease. Baseball Hall of Fame (1939).
