      (c. 1584–1656), American colonist; born in England. He accompanied the Pilgrims to America in 1620 and became the military leader of Plymouth Colony. He is romanticized as the lovelorn suitor in Longfellow's fictional poem The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858).
