- (1933–67), English playwright; born John Kingsley Orton. He wrote a number of unconventional black comedies, examining corruption, sexuality, and violence; they include Entertaining Mr Sloane (1964) and Loot (1965). Orton was murdered by his gay lover, who then committed suicide.
