      (circa 1752–84), American poet; born in Africa. She was sold as a slave at age eight to the John Wheatley family of Boston. She was educated by them and then accompanied a member of the family to London, where her first volume of poetry, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral (1773), was published.
