      (1772–1823), English political economist, of Dutch parentage. He is best known for On the Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817), in which he set out his views on prices, wages, and profits. A supporter of free trade and the repeal of the Corn Laws, he was elected to Parliament in 1819.
