- (1822–90), German archaeologist. In 1871 he began excavating the mound of Hissarlik on the north-eastern Aegean coast of Turkey, where he discovered the remains of nine superimposed cities, identifying the second oldest as Homer's Troy, although it was later found to be pre-Homeric. He subsequently undertook excavations at Mycenae (1876).
